Blue Tansy & Topical CBD
Topical use of herbal remedies derived from flowers stretch to the beginnings of the modern era, perhaps even farther. Archaeological evidence suggests herbal medicines date back as far as 60,000 years (1), so it only makes sense that we are drawn to these natural healing methods. Topical creams have long been a staple of the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries because of the effectiveness of topical applications, so it’s easy to understand why there has been a huge push from consumers to provide more natural, organic ingredients.
One ingredient in particular has been receiving a lot of attention for its topical use within the cosmetic industry. Blue Tansy, with its ability to sooth skin blemishes and its sweet aroma, can be made into an essential oil that acts as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic(*) for irritated skin. According to Sylla Sheppard-Hanger’s Aromatherapy Practitioner Reference Manual, its rich blue hue and its anti-inflammatory properties are due to the terpenoid azulene(4).
More commonly referred to as “hemp”, this particular strain of cannabis is rich in CBD, the cannabinoid most commonly know for its anti-inflammatory and anxiolytic properties. With the boom of the medical cannabis movement over the past decade, topical application of cannabis has seen much praise, with some trials seeing a reduction in inflammation and pain(2). In one particular case study, a topical CBD patch helped rats with arthritic joint pain, with those running the study finding thickening of the synovial membrane, which is what helps lubricate joints(2). In some more extreme cases, there have even been positive results in the topical application of cannabis oil on epidermolysis bullosa, a condition that blisters the skin(3).
The most important aspect with topical application of CBD is the bioavailability it provides. Aloe, a common topical cream ingredient, helps CBD enter the bloodstream for a more powerful impact. This opens the door to opportunities at the most effective form of CBD consumption
At LabCanna, our research and development team has been fascinated with herbal infusions, which provide your body with all the benefits these plants have to offer. Consuming essential oils that have not been infused results in massive waste. Our lab is currently testing the effectiveness of Blue Tansy paired with CBD in topical creams, balms, and even tinctures. With such a potent foundation, we are excited to see the extent of this new product’s therapeutic capabilities.
